This month’s FoodSpark is a collaboration with United Story: Ferguson Beyond Today in conjunction with the IMPTXDESIGN.14/15. Exhibition currently on display at the Regional Arts Commission.

What to expect:
+ Listen to stories collected as part of the United Story: Ferguson Beyond Today collaborative digital media project

+ Participate in a group discussion and share your own thoughts on how individuals’ perspectives and voices can collectively combine to create a diverse united story

Don’t forget to bring a dish! FoodSparks are always potlucks and this month we are asking folks to bring a dish with a diversity of ingredients! It could be a pot of chili, a hearty salad, loaded brownies, or anything else that has many different ingredients that together make a delicious, consumable dish.

United Story: Ferguson Beyond Today is a collaborative digital media project that brings together individuals’ perspectives and voices in reflection of the uprising in Ferguson, MO surrounding the shooting death of Michael Brown. Featured video stories were collected by St. Louis youth who engaged Ferguson and St. Louis residents in door-to-door listening campaigns September–December 2014, prompting the question, “What does Ferguson look like beyond today?” The resulting digital archive features stories whose themes regard the personal experiences neighbors have had in the movement, the relationships of local police with the community, the historical connections of police and community violence locally, and the youth response and mobilization nationwide.

United Story is a program powered by the social design firm, Civic Creatives, in St. Louis, MO. United Story uses story-based approaches to address social justice and community-inspired topics across the United States. By collecting narratives surrounding a social concern, creating art from these narratives, and gathering communities to hear, see, and interact with its members’ stories, United Story helps neighborhoods, schools, cities, and governments innovate community-owned action and solutions to the selected social topic.

United Story: Ferguson Beyond Today is created in collaboration by Civic Creatives, Connected for Justice, and The Nine Network of Public Media’s Nine Lab. It has been supported by the Regional Arts Commission, Greater University Service Foundation, and Creative Reaction Lab.

IMPTXDESIGN.14/15. Exhibition is one of many efforts in the St. Louis region igniting a call to action within our communities for racial equality and eradicating police brutality. It features social impact designs and visual artistic responses developed over the last year that will require attendees to reflect, engage, converse approaches in designing a better St. Louis (#DESIGNSTL) and, ultimately, a better self.
