Breadwin Bakery Helping absentee dads become better caretakers through baking and social enterprise Client: Breadwin Bakery Services: Branding, Business Model Development Info BREADWIN IS A FOOD ENTERPRISE THAT AIMS TO EQUIP ABSENT FATHERS TOWARD BETTER FATHERHOOD BY EMPLOYING AND TRAINING THEM IN LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT. Breadwin exists to support, train, and employ fathers-in-need in Black and minority communities. It teaches skills through cooking and restaurant services as fathers participate in its Breadwinners training program to learn fatherhood, household management, and leadership skills that are necessary for family and professional growth. To fund Breadwinners, Breadwin aims to use profits generated from the sale of baked pastries and savory dishes as well as proceeds from its catering services. Background In the United States, 32.6% of youth under age 18 live in female-headed, single-parent households (US Census, 2013). Over 700,000 American men who have been identified as biological fathers remain absent and/or inactive, and only a small percentage of this group (26.8%) provide financial child support. Because of this, life outcomes for minority youth are negatively impacted and experience more accounts of violence, criminalization, decreased academic attainment, and poverty. Approach Breadwin addresses the aforementioned problems by nurturing men to be better fathers, spouses, providers, and leaders. Its Breadwinners program will employ and train fathers-in-need through a year-long certificate fellowship, paying participants $15/hour and teaching culinary skills and business leadership. Workshops complement training to nurture financial and family management skills. Breadwin Bakery and Catering supports Breadwinners and offers a menu of twelve baked sweet and savory dishes that are catered and sold to local restaurants for distribution. As it develops its brick-and-mortar bakery, these offerings will be sold directly to consumers. Fathers will lead Breadwin’s kitchen, sales, marketing, and hospitality operations.
